External hard drive??????

Rostislav

Can you take out the hard drive from a external hdd and put it in a laptop. the hdd from it is a 2.5 7200 rpm 60gb

Answer
Mostly No, except for a few exceptions, the hard drive in an external portable drive is too large (not in capacity but in physical size) to fit in the hard drive space of a laptop. . Even the thinner external drives are probably too large. A laptop hard drive is usually built into a 2 3/4 - 3 1/2" inch credit card size like case, with several pins attached to the internal cables connected to the hard drive. The hard drive in an external is connected to a USB socket that is attached to the hard drive connector on the circuit board inside the external hd case. You cannot simply remove the drive and expect it to work inside the laptop. It wont screw up your motherboard, it just wont read if you some how create some kind of cable to convert the signal. External harddrives are considered slave drives and would only be recognized as a partitioned drive (removable storage drive) but you would need the main hard drive on the laptop to even detect it.

Is there a 7200 RPM USB Hard drive?

I am told I need a fast hard drive for a particular application on my Windows 7 machine. 7200 RPM is suggested. Does anyone make a fast USB 7200 RPM hard drive?

Answer
Virtually all 3,5ich hard drives for desktop systems are 7200RPM. The fastest consumer "internal" desktop models use 10000RPM. "Raptors"

Laptops either use slower 5400RPM 2.5 inch disks or some now have 7200RPM also.

Some USB external drives are 7200RPM and some [particularly portable external drives for laptops with no external power supply] are 5400RPM. It is always clearly marked on the packaging.

The WesternDigital MyBook series are all 7200RPM and are very good performance and good value too. Plenty of different sizes [500GB up to 3TB] and both USB 2 and faster USB 3 models if your system supports USB 3. See here: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/external/desktop/
