Which is the best external hard drives for backups? and software?

I currently perform tape backups, but want to move over to backing up to external hard drives. I need to back up about 300GB of data, my exchange store and sql database and a full backup of my C:

Answer
I find internal hard drives are much more reliable. They don't get banged around, have a better power supply, run cooler, they aren't unplugged while they are still writing corrupting the file system, etc.

As you need at least 300 GB of backup. Get a 500 GB or larger external hard drive. I always look for one that is rated 5 stars and has a lot of reviews. A 1000GB external hard drive costs almost as much as three 500GB external hard drives.

If you have a home network you might consider adding an old computer on you network and and use it to backup files for all your computers. Install in it one or more 500GB internal hard drives at $110 each or less.

Best backup/syncing software for external hard drives?

abdul.monn

Hi, I have bought an external hard drive (Seagate Expansion Portable 500GB) which I want to keep as a backup for my files. Does anyone know of a good software, preferably free, that allows the ability to add files and folders to the software and it automatically syncs and copies all the files in those folders to the external hard drive, and every time I make any changes to the files on the computer, either add new files to a folder, or delete or update documents, then when the software syncs, it updates it to the hard drive as well. Like iTunes I suppose, but also to update say documents if I edited it.
I also want to be able to use the hard drive like normal as well, as in plug it in where ever to access and transfer files to and from.....

Answer
Handy Backup can do it well, it's an easy to use and reliable backup/syncing software for external hard drives.
