Will a USB 3.0 portable hard drive work on my Windows XP PC using an adaptor for a USB 2.0 port?

Donna

I have an older Windows XP laptop and it only has USB 2.0 ports. I'd like to get another portable Hard Drive to use with it, but most are the newer USB 3.0 drives. Is there an adaptor I could use with my older laptop/USB 2.0 port to connect and use a USB 3.0 portable hard drive that would work successfully?

Answer
No adapter is needed.
USB 3.0 is directly backwards compatible with both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1/1.0

Just plug and play, that's all you need to do.

However, note that the actual data access and transfer will take place at the slower USB 2.0 speed, not at the fast USB 3.0 speed.

portable external hard drive?

i am planning on buying this portable hard drive.

i am wondering if it will survive being jostled around in by back pack or not. (it will be off of course) or should i invest in a LaCie "Rugged" hard drive??? (still portable, but designed to take a beating)
