I am in the market for a new laptop. I was told the bigger the harddrive, the faster it will run. I found a Dell with a 500 gig hard drive at 54000 rpm and one with a 250 hard drive at 74000 rpm??? I only will use it to access the internet and store my music from iTunes. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Answer
"the bigger the HD the faster it will run" is completely inaccurate.

The HD size (500Gb or 250Gb) is the amount of space on the HD to save files. 500Gb will mean you can store more songs.

The HD speed (54000rpm or 74000rpm) is the speed the HD spins - this equates to how fast files on the HD can be found and accessed.

The CPU info will tell you how fast individual tasks can be processed by the CPU (Central Processing Unit)

The RAM info will tell you how fast and how much RAM can be utilized during operation. A computer uses RAM to keep data that is currently in use in a location that can be read fast (faster than on the HD) and in any order.

As a general rule, if you want to "make your computer faster", increasing the RAM will see the most improvement.
------------
For a new laptop, look for:
- HD 500Gb, 74000rpm or higher
- CPU Intel Core2 Duo (2Ghz or more)
- RAM, atleast 2Gb (although it will probably come with less, make sure you can upgrade it to 2Gb or more)

Be wary of offers that seem too good to be true until you have looked at all the specs, regardless of what a salesperson says.

If you find one you like, write down the model number and look up reviews online - especially if you can find comparisons to other computers in the same price range.
------------
Other important things to consider when buying a laptop are:

- Dimensions and Weight (depends how portable you need it to be).
- Battery Life (you want 6hours at least! there is nothing portable about a 3hour battery).
- Screen Resolution (different to screen size), higher resolution will give you a better image.
- Built-in DVD-writer AND WIFI.
- Number of USB ports (how many do you need? probably 4).
- How loud are the built-in speakers? Very important if you are using it for music and yet hardly ever is this shown in the specs sheet. Go to a store and ask them to crank up the speakers for you on a few different models.

Is the Dell mini 9 16 GB SSD too small for you? Is it really enough for pics and music?

I am considering getting a Dell mini 9, but I am concerned that I will run our of hard drive space.

HELP!!!!
16 GB is the most you can get in it at this point. Is it worth it?

Answer
help yourself to a complete comparison,
Comparison of netbooks

choice at newegg,
ASUS Eee PC 1000H 160G â Fine Ebony NetBook Intel Atom 10.0" Wide SVGA 1GB Memory 160GB HDD Integrated Graphics
$479.99

entire collection,

and hopefully you have a good enough reason for a 'netbook' as against a regular laptop !

& btw you can add storage to the 16gb ssd, by adding in a
i. SDHC > Kingston 8GB Micro SDHC Flash Card Model MBLY/8GBKR, $17.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134839
ii. USB Flash drive > Patriot Razzo 32GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) Model PSF32GRUSB, $64.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220316
both above augment your 16gb ssd storage

but then please do remember that music playback will be pretty poor with a single teeny weeny speaker
pictures again will show limited, 8.9" screen with 1024x600 resolution

now i hope you are better placed to decide & should you have further doubts ... feel free to ask
