What could I use to back up ALL of my files? (and question about .avi videos)?

Christine

I want to put all my files on something. I have a TON of videos in .avi format, and a ton of mp3s. I tried to put it on my flash drive (cuz I know nothing about computers) and it said I needed like 2 GB more space to just put on some of the videos. I need something huge I'm guessing, to fit it all.
I'm worried because my computer overheats a lot so I want to back everything up. A lot of my stuff is obsolete and irreplaceable.

So what would I need that would fit everything, that would also work on any computer? Like plug into a usb port or something...
I thought of maybe a portable harddrive or something but I dont even know what that is so I'd need an explanation, and can all computers read those?

Also, since most of the videos are in .avi format, those videos only have ever played on my computer. In order for me to send them or upload them somewhere, I'd always import them into movie maker and publish it as a .wmv file (which could then be uploaded to youtube or sent to a friend and played in windows media player).
Does this mean that the .avi videos only will work on this computer, or does it mean that if I put them on a harddrive or something else, they would still be valid and work-able, but would just need to be converted later if I wanted to upload them to the internet?

I don't want to import and convert them all to wmv to save them, I could just do that on an as-needed basis later on. As long as I can put them into movie maker (cuz I like to make videos) from another computer, I'm fine with that. But I dont know if the fact that they are .avi means that I can only do that on this one (like maybe it's just a shortcut or something)..

Does anyone know anything about this that could help me out?

Answer
I think you should buy a 250GB hard drive from somewhere like comet, currys, pcworld there only about £35.00

Both Windows and Macs can write and read to portable hard drives
