500mb external hard drive question?

Sue Kirk

my son wants a external hard drive for his birthday. I dont want to spend a fortune for one, I was looking at a 500 mb one. I know nothing about these. He wants to download some videos on it. I want to know since it only holds about 38 hours worth of videos, can he erase the ones he dont want an free up more space to record more.any help would be appreciated. thanks

Answer
Perhaps you meant GB?

Yes, well, a 500GB hard drive can store more or less videos depending on the filesize and quality of the video itself, so measuring a hard disk by saying how many hours worth of video it can hold is not really practical.

Yes, he can delete data on the drive that he doesn't want to keep in order to free up space.

There are 2 types of external drives -- pocket drives and desktop drives.

Pocket drives are more expensive per gigabyte, but they are very small and portable. Example:

Desktop drives are bulkier and requires it to be plugged into a power source to work, but they are cheaper per gigabyte than pocket drives.
Example:

Obviously, if he wants a lot of storage space, but you want to keep the price down, you should get the desktop drive.

Portable Hard Drive Question?

Kaila

I am looking into a portable hard drive as a backup for my computer. Are all of my files transferred to the portable hard drive or are they on both or how does it work? Any info would be great. Thanks.

Answer
It depends what you want to do. Assuming your portable hard drive is big enough, you can move all your files onto it and delete them from your computer to free up space, or keep them on both and use the drive as a backup.

All you do is plug in the drive and it will act in the same way as your hard drive. So you'd plug in the usb cord and then copy/paste the files that you want to move. Assuming that you have windows the hard drive will show up in the My Computer window just like your computers regular drive.

Hope this helps.
