Can you partition an external hard-drive?

Jamie L

I've got a Western Digital Portable Hard-drive 300gb... and i have a macbook pro, with boot camp that runs vista as well, i have formated the external HD to work with Time machine on mac but now it won't work when i'm running windows?

Could someone please tell me a way i could use the external hard drive for both? maybe make a partition like i have on my Mac HD?

Also, i can't see the mac HD partition in windows but i can see the windows HD in mac? could anyone tell me a way to view the mac in windows that's free please?
Would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx alot!!

Partitioning the drive can be done either using a Linux Live CD or formatting the disc and adding partitions within Windows. As far as I know Mac OSX sees the windows partitions because Mac supports the FAT32 filing structure, however Windows has never supported the Mac filing structure and likely never will as the need for it is much smaller than its opposite. Mac needs to be able to see FAT32 to see multimedia cards used for digital cameras which are preformatted FAT/FAT32

I just bought a 500 GB portable hard drive.?

I created a volume with truecrypt and tried putting files on it that are over 4 GB. It wont let me because that volume is in fat32. Is there anyway I can get it to change to ntfs without ruining the files I have on it ?

How to convert FAT32 Disk to NTFS in Windows Vista and XP with the Convert utility?

Back up data in the partition or drive that you want to convert, to another drive or partition or another computer system or PC or any other storage media.

In Windows XP:

Click <Start> â> <Run>
Enter âcmdâ into the text field labeled âOpenâ.
Click <OK> button
If you want to convert drive D (D:), enter the command âvol d:â in the command window, to find the volume label for the D: partition
Then enter the command âconvert d: /fs:ntfsâ to convert the D: partition from FAT32 to NTFS
When prompted, enter the volume label for the partition
In Windows Vista:

Click <Start> sphere
In the Start Menu search box, simply enter âcmdâ and hit enter.
If you want to convert drive D (D:), enter the command âconvert d: /fs:ntfsâ to convert the D: partition from FAT32 to NTFS

You can use the âconvert /?â command to bring up information on how to manage the conversion. As long as the drive or partition or disk that you want to convert is not in use, FAT32 to NTFS conversion will happen without any issues. Otherwise, the conversion must be postponed for the next time you reboot the computer system or PC. On Windows Vista start up, you will be prompted to either cancel or carry on with the conversion. The FAT32 to NTFS conversion process is fully automated and it involves a couple of restarts.Let Windows vista or XP to do the conversion.
