External Hard-drive?

Hari

Does anyone know what a good brand for an external hard-drive is? Is western digital good? I am looking for a 250gb external hard-drive up to $100.

Answer
The hard disks inside are all good brands; no surprise when only six or seven companies made SATA 3.5" units. The problem is, some of the cheaper mystery brand have poor cooling that imperils the hard disk, while others use shoddy drive interfaces that have a way of failing. A Western Digital should be fine. I've never owned their externals, but have used drives of theirs going back to a 40MB stepper. Good stuff, and after Seagate's recent quality slip, perhaps the best in the industry at the moment.

For your money, you're probably looking at a minimum of 500 gigabytes such as this. I'm not even sure WD still makes externals under 500GB in a 3.5" format:

Slim, low profile, external hard drive?

steven

Running out of space on my laptop (which I use as a desktop at home) and want to link my Itunes to an external HD to free up space.

Recommendations for a slim, quality external HD?

Preferably not too expensive.

Thanks.

Answer
I know it's not a hard drive recommendation bu you should really look into hard drive caddys. they work by turning your optical drive into another hard drive slot. you obviously lose the optical drive abilities but it means you get to carry your secondary drive on the laptop at all times. I got mine when I installed my smaller faster solid state drive. I managed to keep my old hard drive rather than not use it and get a lot more usable. I found this especially useful because its easier to travel with my laptop. i don't have to carry an external drive with me which can be more fragile than a laptop. (external drives are easier to get knocked around while in use but your laptop stays more stationary) it also means I get tot save a USB port during regular use and don't need to pull out an external from my bag. also, internal hard drives are cheaper than external ones. you don't need to pay for a case.
