It has 2 gigs of ram and I think only 250gigs of hard drive space. It's gettin slow and old. I can't afford a new one and was hoping I could upgrade it. I was wondering if it could handle as much as I want to put in it(as far as ram and internal storage) or if there's limits. And also if any ram or hard drive would work. Meaning, it doesn't have to be a "Mac" ram disk.

RAM Type: PC3-8500 DDR3
Min. RAM Speed: 1066 MHz
Supports 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM.
Standard RAM: 2 GB Maximum RAM: 8 GB*
Details:
2 GB of RAM is installed as two 1 GB modules, no slots free.
*Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM, but third-parties have confirmed that it actually supports 8 GB of RAM.
I just answered here about RAM:

Now, about HDD, replacing an HDD is tricky because you have to transfer data, confirm it is a match to form and size, and currently there is an HDD shortage in the industry and prices are rising. I really dislike a lot of the flaws about Apple. Very bad on value for price, low end of CPUs and external ports+slots, weak graphics GPU, and every upgrade bought directly from Apple is outrageous in price. But they are good hardware as reliable and Windows sucks compared to OSX.

Now, recommendation for an HDD regardless of the poor number of slots is a pluggable HDD by USB or port as this is not an old MacAir with the single hidden USB. Check Newegg, Tigerdirect, and if west coast US as far as Las Vegas Fry's in-store specials, and occassionally see something at an office store or warehouse club or walmart. Put large older less frequently accessed files on the external drive. Maybe move itunes and its library. That should free up your system HDD and can be done easy and reasonably cheap. It can be a portable pocket external or a big memory flash drive if you want it as faster speed access, or a desktop drive.

I don't like Apple for their huge profits on what they sell, but hope I gave you the info you needed.

What to do when your hard drive fills up?

No amount of disk cleanup or anything like that can help. I simply have too many programs and files I'm not willing to part with.

What's my easiest solution for getting more storage? Should I get an external hard drive and move some stuff off of this one? Should I get a new internal hard drive? But then how do I rebuild and what do I use for backup?
It's a two year old Dell laptop

Answer
External & especially portable HD's Rock! You can carry 160-500GB's in your shirt pocket. They are very reliable!

$79 4 250-500GB depending on which model you want. Walmart usually beats Newegg.com unless they have a sale.

Update:
Just saw your addition details.
Definitely get a portable HD! You'll love it & you don't have 2 drag around a 5llb brick to share files, etc.
