Hi, I would like to buy a External Portable Hard drive with Windows 7 support. I have installed Windows 7 in my system and it should be able to recognize that external portable hard drive.
Specifications
Size : 500 GB
RPM : 7200 or greater
Support Service : India

Preferred Company : Seagate

Answer
Externals are connected through USB cables / ports.. Win7 should have no problems recognizing an external drive the moment its switched on. (may take a moment to find a driver or read through the files on it.)

With computer running, connect USB cable first, then switch on external drive.

Seagate GoFlex ultra-protable external hard drive not being detected?

So well...I've got an external hard drive called "Seagate GoFlex 1.5 TB Ultra-portable USB 2.0 hard drive"

However, though, just recently I changed the USB wire that connects my hard drive to my computer because the old one was damaged and now I've got a little data transferring to do.On my original TOSHIBA computer it was working fine (before I changed the wire) Now I'm using my hard drive on my dad's laptop it's a Sony Vaio windows 7 32-bit operating laptop apparently everytime I plug-in the USB port of the hard drive to my computer it pops up in My Computer directory and goes away and it keeps repeating like this....I don't know what to do I also ran the driver software that is available on seagate's official website it's not helping at all.Any help will be greatly appreciated.
yes my Toshiba is also windows 7 but is 64-bit
i'd also like to make one thing clear is that the Sony Vaio does not have a genuine Windows 7 it has to get activated....however, what you mentioned about the possiblity of the wire being the root cause of the problem is high..I really hope that's not the case :(

Answer
The only quick thing i can think is a compatibility issue. Was the Toshiba Win7? or Possibly the the usb cable you replaced with is simply a charging cable( 2 transfer wires inside instead of 4)you have to have 2 for power,2 for transfer. The cable could still show 4 connects on the ends but only be setup for charging a phone or device. If the old cable just has a damaged wire, try spicing it and see if it still works.
