I have 20 GB of tunes on my computer. Should I get a portable hard drive? Amazon Cloud? Basically, I'm scared my old computer is going to crash and completely wipe out my music collection.

Answer
20gb isn't a great deal so a big honking external drive could be considered overkill. If you don't see your collection growing beyond 32gb in the near future, I'd simply buy a cheap USB memory stick. 32gb sticks are pretty cheap now. These are so much easier to handle, a tiny little stick that you can carry in your pocket and leave plugged into a PC/laptop when needed. I don't know where you are in the world but here's a few sites

UK
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Integral-Speed-Courier-Flash-Drive/dp/B001TVF6HG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315692143&sr=8-1
£20 for a 32GB High Speed USB Flash Drive

US
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Flash-Drive-SDCZ36-032G-A11/dp/B001T9CTS2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315692231&sr=8-1
$37 for a 32GB High Speed USB Flash Drive

For greater future proofing, consider a 64gb flash drive.

Now you'll be able to automate the backup so you don't have to think about it.

For even more security, you could consider backing up online on a less regular basis as it is a bit of a hassle to do all the time. I wouldn't pay for any service with the kind of backup size you want. Windows own cloud storage service is free and offers 25gb. Combine that with some other free services and you're set to go.

What's the dif btw USB drive and Portable hard drive?

I wan to buy a new storage, but I've noticed a 64 gb usb drive and 500 gb portable hard drive are the same price. Is there something more special about usb's that I don't know about? because the portable hard drive seems like a better deal.
Thanks

Answer
It's hard to tell because you don't give exact specs of the equipment, but to hazard a guess, I'm thinking that the 64GB USB drive is a simple flash drive while the portable hard drive is exactly that... a standard hard drive in an external USB enclosure.

The 64GB flash drive is simply one of those USB "sticks" that you plug into the side of a computer for transfer of data between systems. There are no moving parts inside a flash drive (it's all chip-based memory) and no external power requirements. These types of drives are pretty much commonplace now... even though the 64GB size is a bit larger than average.

A portable hard drive is much different than a flash drive. It will be much larger and will most likely require an external power source. Inside the enclosure will be a standard hard drive, exactly like the hard drive inside your computer or laptop now. This means it has moving parts and is more sensative to shock and vibration than a flash drive. However, since a portable hard drive uses standard hard drives as a storage medium they can be much larger in size for a smaller cost. That's why you'll see external portable hard drives in hundreds of gigabyte sizes like the 500GB model you found.

Portable hard drives may also vary in the type of connection they use to attach to the computer. While USB is the most common, you can also find portable hard drives that connect via Firewire and eSATA.

If you want to buy new storage to copy files and move data frequently between sites, I would go with the flash drives. If you want to buy new storage to have a place on a stationary system to store large amounts of files, but you won't be moving this data to other locations frequently, then the external hard drive is for you.

I think once you get a look at them in a store, the differences will become even more apparent.

Good luck!
