The hard drive in my computer doesn't work, so I have to buy another. Can I just buy an external one or do I need an internal one?

Since your internal drive is connected using a SATA connection and an external is connected via USB an internal hard drive works faster so it's recommended that you get an internal hard drive to install your operating system and other applications on. External drives are usually for file storage. Also your BIOS will most probably have a problem booting from your external drive as it looks for an internal drive to boot your operating system from and it's your operating system that allows you to connect your external hard drive using the USB drivers.

So no, it's very unlikely that you'll be able to get by with an external HD alone.

Reasons:
* Portable Hard-drives have a high failure rate ( Hard drive error, you drop it, magnets, water/weather)
* High Startup cost ($99+ for a cheap one) and warranty is usually limited
* You have to carry several pounds around
* Need to have more power to use it
* Easy for someone to steal your drive
* You don't have the drive with you then you can't get to your data

Reasons for Cloud:
* Secure and Encrypted
* Comes with backup software that you can schedule and will back it up
* Easy access from any computer in the world to your data
* Data can't be lost/destroyed
* Low monthly/yearly fees for data, as storage gets cheaper prices will fall.

Can anyone tell me how to install programs onto a portable hard drive?

I just bought a portable hard drive and am looking forward to installing programs on it so my computer's hard drive will be less cluttered. Does anyone know how to do this? I want to install my computer games, music media organizer, and various others onto it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

When you connect the protable hard drive you will need to format it with your Windows software or the Portable hard drives manufacturers CD which came with it. Then once it is formatted all you will need to do is connect it via the USB cable and then it will install itself. You then can go to MY COMPUTER and see it listed there. Then any file or program you want to store on there or save on there can be easily transfered/stored by left clicking on the file (highlight it) and then on the top of the open window go to left click EDIT, then either COPY TO FOLDER or MOVE TO FOLDER, (then another window will pop up with all you drives and folders) you will then find your PORTABLE HARD DRIVE in there LEFT click on it and it will save to that hard drive. You can also make a new folder once you open up the Portable Hard drive in the popup window so you can save different things in different folders. Hope this helped..

I am buy a portable hard drive with a memory capacity of about 300 to 500 GB and want it to be rather slim.

I have no clue about hard drives and don't know what I need to look for or what some good brands are.

you will find many hard drive brands available. All are slim and sleek unless you go for 1 TB of space and all. But generally 500 GB Hard drives are slim in a case. You can check out the prices of the Hard drives and the various brands of hard drives with their prices on ebay.com and you can also order from there if shipping doesn't take a lot. More importantly you can see the pictures of hard drive and then from local market you can buy the particular hard drive if u wish to.
