I do not put much stock into the brands of External drives as long as it is a major brand that I recognize:

Western Digital
Iomega
Seagate
LaCie
Verbatim
Buffalo
Hitachi
TEAC

The features of the drive are more important to me:

7200 RPM
USB 3.0
Proper capacity
Portable--meaning that it only needs USB, and does not need a second plug for electricity.

Another option to consider is that you may want a mirrored external drive (if one drive dies, your data is still on the other). Here is one. i am looking to buy a external hard drive for my computer and i need to know what the best type to get is. i do not have a huge budget for this so whatever is the least expensive but something that will last. also what size should i get? is a 2 Tb to much?

2 Tb is almost certainly more than you need. You could store about 1,500 full length DVD-ripped movies on 2 Tb.

In my opinion, the best external hard drive made is the LaCie Rugged All-Terrain USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive. It has the following features:

Drop-resistant (not drop-proof though)
"Portable" means that you don't have to plug in a separate power cord
USB 3.0 means that it will be faster with newer computers that have USB 3.0
7200 RPM is the fastest type of external drive
