Why won't other computers recognize my portable hard drive!? Mac & pc?

So I have a 500 gb iomega portable HD and it works fine when I plug it into my MacBook and recognizes it right away on the desktop but when I went to plug it into my friends PowerBook it never showed up as being recognized. It's not in the macs HD or the pcs "my comp".The same thing happened when I tried it on my other friends pc based notebook. The blue light on the HD always came on. My question is it just hidden on their comps? How do I find it for both a mac and pc?

I've been looking at some 320 gb external hard drives for my extensive photo files and as a back up for my documents. I have a Mac Pro laptop, and a PC desk top and need to share the portable hd files between them. Is that possible?

Yes. Ensure your drive is formatted correctly or purchased those drive with the Mac OSX and Windows compatible logo. See the link below for more info about the different formats.
