hey, i bought this hitache portable hard drive, red, 250 gb, at costco. I've had it for 3 months, and now when i plug it in it doesent show up in finder or anything, but occasionly when i unplug it, a message stating the device was not properly ejected shows up. help?
Thanks, but no. It ususally pops up on the desktop, and in devices, but not now. Is thier any software i can download to try and fix it or something?

The most likely way your not finding is your not looking in the right place? but I assume you know better....
BTW dont transfer any data and unpljg it becuase that is how you screw up hard disks....if you did that your going to need to reformat it..

What is the purpose of an external hard drive?

All laptops/computers already come with an internal hard drive, right? If so, if it gets a virus or breaks or something, will all my files be restored (including itunes) with the internal hard drive or will I need an external hard drive to get all my files back? Also is there something I need to do to activate the internal hard drive or is it already saving all my files? Or can I somehow copy all my files onto a disk in case of my computer crashing or breaking, or is that what an external hard drive is?
Also what is the best one to get for an HP Special Edition laptop? Thank you so much for any help!

an external hard drive is basically a giant flash drive which you can use to transport files from an old computer to a new one or to keep extra copies of documents or photos or whatever
if you get a virus or your computer gets wet it can really screw it up, an external hard drive is a good way to store files so that they won't slow down your computer and so that nothing bad will happen to them. you can back up your computer at least on vista via the back up and restore center, but it is always good to have a backup
the western digital passport hard drive is good because it is portable and pretty cheap, i would go to like best buy or costco or where ever you can buy electronics and browse their selection, they all do the job, and
