if there is a way to just copy the windows 7 partition on my computer to it, that would be preferable. I don't have the install disk, because my laptop never came with one.

Answer
First off, you CANNOT run a Windows operating system on a USB external hard drive. You can clone a mirror copy of it or create a backup on the drive. Secondly, you would need to set up boot from a USB device in your bios IF the motherboard supports it.

Can i use a windows 7 home premium installation disc on an eternal drive on my mac?

I would like to run windows 7 home premium on my mac using bootcamp, however i only have 40 gb of space left and therefore i do not want to partition my drive. what i would like to do is buy a copy of windows 7 home premium and install it on an external drive, that i would simply plug in and restart to run windows. is this possible, and if so how do i do it?

Answer
You can use a Virtual Machine. Try VMware
http://www.vmware.com/products/player/http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
It does require you to sign up, don't worry it is free.
It will allow you to install Mac, Windows and Linux/Unix onto a portable hard drive.

Got to get data from 3 portable hard drives that stopped working properly and I don't want to get ripped off. All three get power and then blink or beep and the computer doesn't recognize them.

Also if anyone knows of a place in Los Angeles I would really appreciate it.

Answer
It depends on what is wrong with them. I'd guesstimate from $300-1500 a piece from a professional lab. You can compare prices at ontrack, gillware and drivesavers the top 3 data recovery labs and see who comes out cheapest. Generally it will be Gillware though, they also offer free evaluations and have an online estimating tool.

Before you do that you can pull the drives out of their enclosures and try hooking them up directly to a computer or try them in a new enclosure.

I have a video camera with built in memory, but my computer won't upload them becuase I don't have any free space. Everything I have on my computer I want to keep, so if I get a portable hard drive, how do I transfer everything? Can I connect my camera directly to it? or do I have to upload it to my computer first?

Answer
portable hard drives, like a flash drive, you plug in USB and just drag the files onto it.
