portable hard drive keeps disconnecting mac image

nichole

Hi all,
So the other day I had my brothers 30g video ipod plugged into the computer, and I started copying his songs to the computer as a backup. Problem is - When it said it was safe to disconnect it, I did, and it's had probs ever since. When turning it on it goes to the Apple logo, the backlight lights up, then it doesnt go anyf urther. BAM it starts again with the logo, the light, and keeps constantly restarting. I was able to put it in disk mode and itunes then detected it and his songs as a portable hard drive I think, however I couldn't find a way to restore it from there.

He took it to the apple store and they said he might as well (well I MIGHT as well) buy him a new ipod cuz the "hard drive is fried". I think they might be wrong because the hard drive worked in itunes when I had it in disk mode..I tried restartingit 2.

I have to go back tomorrow to talk with them so any information is REALLY helpful so I can hopefully explain why I don't need to buy a new one :)

Answer
this is what it says, with your problem.
You may need to restore or update your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod nano by placing it in Disk Mode if only an Apple logo appears when you turn it on.

If this happens, the iPod software may have been damaged. Put iPod into Disk Mode, then restore or update iPod's software.

Put iPod into Disk Mode.
iPod should appear in the iTunes Source pane and on the desktop or in a Finder window, or in the My Computer window.
If a message appears that says the volume could not be mounted and asks if you want to initialize the disk, choose to initialize iPod's disk. Use Mac OS Extended format (HFS Plus) if you have a Mac, or FAT32 if you have a Windows PC.

Warning: This process cannot be undone. All of your songs, videos, and other files will be deleted. Always make a backup of your important data.

Follow the steps to update or restore iPod. If you manually put iPod into Disk Mode it may need to be reset before you can use it.

If you cannot put iPod into Disk Mode after performing these steps, it may need to be repaired. You can arrange for repair at the iPod Service Website.
