I bought a portable hard drive but cannot find out how to sync it with my computer's hard drive. How do I do this and is there any way I can configure my computer to do this every time I hook up my portable hard drive?

Open up the portable drive.
Right click, select New > Briefcase.
This is a major built-in sychronization feature of Windows.
Just follow directions that pop up.

I have heard that portable hard drives can be corrupted if your computer fails and you have to reboot it. so are there any precautions that I can take to stop it from doing this?

no programs or anything that i know of but the portable drives only become corrupted when power is cut, the system is reset/crashes or the device is removed while files are being changed/saved on the hard disk.

I would reccommend that when you are changing/saving something to the portable disk that you don't run too many programs or do anything to possibly interrupt the process and to eject the device then pull it out when you aren't using it.
