Why won't or how can i play movies from my external hard drive?

I have a seagate 500 GB external hard drive and movies music, etc. on it and when I go to my friends house to play movies, they won't play or either they just only play audio. Does anyone know how to fix this or tell me how to get them to play on a Macbook laptop?

No, I don't know the solution but I have a suggestion. - There is one movie player that plays absolutely every format known. VLC, it may work for you.

How do you recover hidden files/data off a cleared internal hard drive?

I had a ton of AMAZING vacation pics awhile back and didn't have enough room to put it on my pc. At the time I didn't have an external hard drive so I made the terrible decision to dump them on my relatives hard drive as a hidden file. I unfortunately forgot about it all and hadn't had a chance to transfer the files to my new hard drive after I got it. Found out that she got a new mac and cleared her old pc's internal hard drive without telling me cause it had a virus and she wanted to start off on a clean slate. Now all those memorable pics are GONE! I've checked out a few data recovery software's in the link below:

Has anyone used any of these programs and do you think they'll be useful/effective for my situation? Should I give it a shot and if so which one? Moreover, when someone clears an internal hard-drive do hidden files get removed along with the rest or do they usually stay hidden within the pc?

Any help and advice would be appreciated!
I unfortunately don't know anyone whom is strong in this area... I just badly NEED A SOLUTION to this problem. If the pc hard-drive has been cleared over a year ago do you think there's no chance of recovery? I had upwards 200+ worth of pics and video too!!! :( I can't afford to take it for recovery services since they charge upwards $1500!! Any reasonably priced software or trial version recovery programs would be greatly appreciated.

you should right click in the folder you put them in and click on properties then check hidden on the bottom and click ok and a pop up should appear and click on the "apply Changes to this folder only" that should reveal it. SHIT READ THAT OVER AGAIN if you cleared your drive and there is a file called Windows.old in my computer then maybe you can get it back other that that no
