will a usb 3.0 external hard drive work with a usb 2.0 port?

Dj Dood

I am looking to purchase a external hard drive but the ones I want to choose from say they are usb 3.0. If I buy one will it work with usb 2.0 ports two?

Answer
yes all external drives are what is called backwards compatible, so if you plug a 3.0 into a 2.0 socket, the drive in effect pretends to be a 2.0 drive, you also only get the 2.0 speed so dont expect the lightning fast you could get. Why not invest in a 3.0 pcie card and take the benefits.

Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 External Hard drive?

I currently have a usb 2.0 mac only. but will be upgrading soon too a RMBP. So I was woondering if anyone is aware of any external hard drives that support Thunderbolt, USB 3.0 and 2.0??? Preferable if it was greater than 500gbs and not too expensive.

Thanks

Answer
I only know of two Seagate does some great hard drives that can be easily converted to USB 2/3 and Thunderbolt through their GoFlex Technology and Lacie makes some really nice Thunderbolt and USB 3 HDDs.
