problem to recognize Verbatim 320GB USB Portable Hard Drive on my vista?

@NDre@S

HELLO I HAVE Verbatim 320GB USB Portable Hard Drive...
when i connect it in my 32 bit vista pc it does not be recognized by pc.
However when i put my ubuntu 6.04 live cd in the pc it can be recognized by my pc.

Answer
Vista will not connect to your usb drive but the ubuntu liv-cd will?

Try this: Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management >Storage >Disk Management > locate external your usb drive. If there is a conflict with the letters assigned to the drives, change the usb drive letter to a much lower letter, e.g. H or U.

What does a portable external hard drive do?

Is an external hard drive just used to back up data or can I make a "copy" of my laptop hard drive?

Answer
It allows you to do anything you can with your internal hard drive. Yes you can copy your entire drive over to it, you can even install a complete OS onto it such as Ubuntu or Windows XP, however these will run extremely slow as USB has low data transfer rates compared to internal SATA drives.
