NAS or regular external hard drive?

Erik7

home network. I need a backup drive and want to be able to share files among computers on network. I dont know what to get, NAS or a usb external HDD. My router has a usb port to be able to plug in a hard drive. What do you guys recommend?

Answer
I recommend using an external hard drive, shared, and formatted with NTFS if it's not already. The only problem with this is that you need to have this computer powered on whenever you want to access stuff on the external drive.

How Does an External Hard Drive Work? Is It the Same as a NAS?

I want to get an External Hard Drive for extra memory but i'm unsure of whether I would know how 2 operate it. If I connect my external Drive to my laptop via a USB cable. Is it as simple as going to My Computer and double clicking the drive that appears, such as a flash drive? (minus installing any drivers).

Is a NAS just another name for an external hard drive? Does that work the same way as an external hard drive?

Yes

No. It might have an option to connect directly to your PC using a USB - but it is designed to be connected to a router so you can access it from any PC that also connects to the router with wireless or cabled connection.
