Answer
as far as hard drives are concerned .... WD are the best. and for space , if ur planning on storing around 100 dvd's . can try out the 500 gb
hdd.

what's a good external hard drive please?

Evut

i've noticed maxtor is the most common brand but there are some really bad reviews on a couple of websites which worries me.
i'd like a 500GB one. it doesn't need to be portable.

thanks for your help!

processor is AMD Athlon 64, 3200+ 2.01 GHz, 448MB ram
i have windows xp

To be honest most hard drives are kind of a crapshoot. The so called "best brands" can sometimes put out lemons. I've seen it happen. Sometimes its just a firmware fix, but other times its drives that are toasted. So I wouldn't put a tone of faith in brand issues.

I have collegues that loathe Lacie and Maxtor. Myself I'm not a Lacie fan at all. But I've had one Maxtor that worked out just great for me. I haven't bought many of them no (not on purpose, just didn't happen to be readily available for me).

Right now though I think the Western Digital My Passport drives are amongst your best bet. We use them like work horses and they hold up solid for us. Any of them really. We've had a few die on us, but they were abused in the field, so I suspect human error more than hard drive issues there. There are loads of options with them. You can get ones with USB, Firewire, and/or eSata. And even some with Ethernet. Costco usually has great prices on them.

After that I also like the Seagate Free Agent drives. I mainly prefer Seagate for all the internal drives I buy and use. So I don't mind going Seagate on an external then. But I usually find better deals on the Western Digital drives so I tend to go with those for pure cost reasons.
