Will a standard external hard drive still work?

Nathan

Will a standard external hard drive still work if...

I have a movie collection of around 600GB of HD 1080p movies and I like watching them on my laptop and so on.

If I put these movies on a standard external hard drive in the CAR and bring it with me and watch the movies off of it in the car will the hard drive survive or should I get a portable one?

Answer
1. A standard 3.5 inch external drive needs an external power source. So you would also need a power inverter.
2. As others have said. they don't take the bouncing around in the car too well.
3. You could just put a 500gig drive in your laptop and carry half your movies.

is this a good computer?

intel quad core...1.8ghz...4gb ram...600gm hard drive...i use the computer for extensive internet, videos, dvd, music, pictures, (all saved on a portable hard drive so that shouldnt affect it), downloading, word, ppt, etc...no gaming though

Answer
Perfect, and more then enough for what you use it for.
also that 600GB is pretty big. But like you said you have a portable HD that you save files on.

the 4GB RAM is very nice (although if you don't have a 64 bit system it will only use 3.5/4.0 RAM at once)

Intel Quad is pricey, but one of the best.

Problem: Samsung S2 Portable harddrive 600gb?

portable hard drive 600gb on HP (Hewlett-Packard) 600 GB 2.5
portable hard drive 600gb image

Fordis

Can someone help me, I cannot access my portable hard-drive, Samsung S2 Portable 600gb.
Its okay for me to format it, theres no important files there, but i just cannot go through with it, it says there: There is no Disk in drive, insert a disk then try again.

Also - Disk Management says:

Disk 3
Unknown
596.17 GB
Unreadable

596.17 GB
Unallocated

How to fix this. If I could recover the files, better, if not, atleast I want to have it formatted so I can still use it.

Note: This was once used in MacBook laptop before, is there any related connections or just the same as with Windows-based PC?

Which MacBook Pro should I buy for college?

Quinn

I am buying a laptop for college; I will be attending film school, so I need to run programs such as Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Toonboom, Flash, and a few others. I would like a fast lap top, so I am deciding between two MacBook Pros.

The first option is the 13" MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz, which comes with 250 GB. I would also purchase a portable hard drive, for a total of app. 600GB. This would cost 1,300 dollars.

The second option is that I buy a 13" MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz, which comes with 320 GB. I could buy a portable hard drive, but I probably would not need it. This laptop would cost 1,500 dollars.

So my question is: How important is the GHz on the MacBook Pros? And are there any disadvantages to storing some things on an external hard drive? (Except the fact that I wont take it with me everywhere). Any other differences between the two machines?

Answer
Quinn...

Well, if you're buying a MacBook Pro for film school, the screen size, processor speed, ram, and storage space would all be important -- are you sure you want a 13" MacBook Pro?

For example, for only a $100 or so more, you can get a MacBook Pro MC118LL/A with a 15.4-Inch screen, a 2.53 GHz processor, 250 GB hard drive, 4 GB ram, and 9400M graphics:

Or the MacBook Pro MB985LL/A with a 15.4-Inch screen, a 2.66 GHz processor, a 320 GB hard drive, and 4 GB ram, for about $200 less:

Or the MacBook Pro MB986LL/A with a 15.4-Inch screen, a 2.8 GHz processor, a 500 GB hard drive, and 4 gb ram, for about $500 more.

A couple of things to think about anyway -- good luck.

I saw Samsung S2 Portable, 600gb on properties, but on disk management, i pasted here what i saw. Im using Windows Vista Basic, also i have windows 7.. It says, unreadable, sometimes, no disk, please try to insert disk. It was being used in Mac laptop before. Tnx.

Answer
If it was used in a MacBook, it is probably currently formatted in ext3 or ext4. If you're in a Windows environment, you probably want it to be in NTFS.

You didn't include what OS you're currently running. The info you've cut and pasted seems to be from Disk Management in Windows 7, but you're referring to it as a "portable hard-drive", which seems odd.

Try this tutorial:

Tried to hook up my Flip camara - said not enough disk space. How do i create more disk space?

Please keep it simple....Thank you!!

Answer
um delete duplicate files buy a portable usb harddrive they are about 200-600gb each and you can get one for 90 bux and under to put your files on.delete any files you dont need. also by the way its worth it to get a hard drive either way cuz you can back up your files and not have a crowded computer. also you can use internet backup plans for a yearly charge. I wouldnt though because if the service goes out of business you can lose all your documents.

How do I keep my files safe for years ? (Not in the computer)?

I want to know how people who are really good in computer
keep their files for years.

I've got like 600GB of files that I want to keep safe
for decades.
I have one 400GB External Drive,
2 Portable Hard Drives, one is 20GB and the other is 80GB.

I thought that if I just get a external drive everything will be
simple. Before I burned cds than rw-dvds.
But it tooked so long and needed bunch of cds.
Even with the external drive there was problems.
First sometimes the external drive doesn't show up
in my computer.
After all with the connection problem I could lose the files
even if it didn't got erased.
I also heard that all the files could just get deleted somehow.
Do I have to get 2 external drives and save all the same files
in both to prevent the problem ?
And after about every 5 years I have to buy 2 external drives
or all the files could get deleted ?

Answer
You actually already have the right idea. The best place to store such large amounts of data would be on external hard drives. They are the easiest media sources that are still easy enough to deal with for the average home user. As long as you're dealing with technology you are going to have little issues here and there with cables, connections, drives not showing up, but if you can work your way through those issues and see that all of your data has been copied to the drive, then you are good to go.

I would make sure that all of this important data isn't on just 1 hard drive. That drive could get dropped, smashed, come in contact with a magnet, be involved in a fire...etc. It would wise to have it on 2 different hard drives in different locations.

And lastly, no media source is going to stay in tact forever. It is a good idea to copy all those files again to another set of hard drives in about 5 years. By then, hard drives will probably continue to drop in price anyway.

This will probably be the cheapest and easiest method.
