I bought a portable hard drive a few months ago and its still working great but I filled it up so I went and bought a 4tb desktop hard drive. I left it on over night to transfer a bunch of files and I woke up and it was done and finished. Unplugged it from the laptop and went on my day. Went home, plugged it back in and it said I had to format the drive and when I checked my computer it said that it was inaccessible. In a span of a few hours it stopped working. Their was a small burnt odor that may have just been in my head but it would not open. I then accidentally bumped it onto its side and I just hear a beeping and then it doesnt read at all. I bumped it from a standing position onto its side... It knocked over the flat surface onto carpet. I've seen babies take harder falls and get up. So yea. Should I return and try another desktop harddrive or should I just buy two 1 TB portables for the same price?
@Carling

I believe it's yahoo answers, not I'm not gonna aide in any way and be an a sshole. If you don't have something to contribute then go elsewhere.
and for the record
Windows 7
I scanned the disk
I did transfer unattended
I ALWAYS safely remove hardware so don't make assumptions of sh1t you don't know.
and yes I knocked it over but sue me, I'm fucking human.

Answer
desktop hard drives are not insulated against any bumps at all.
[changes in G-forces, changes in acceleration.. ESPECIALLY while it is powered on will cause the drive head to crash against the platter(s) ]

Portable drives do a better job at absorbing small bumps and knocks.. but even they are very sensitive while powered on.

If you are keeping the drive in a place where it might get bumped or knocked over.. try to move it to a safer spot, and definitely stick with portable or even Solid-State drives.
( Solid State drives don't spin, and have no read heads.. so they don't take damage from basic moves.)

If you get a desktop drive - make sure you put it in a safe place, and only power it on when you need to for backups or access. Protect it from movement. If practical, get a raid enclosure instead, and break up your data over 3 or more drives. If one fails, you can still replace that one and recover all your files.

any hard disk can just 'die' like a light bulb. There are lots of good reasons that they fail, and you can try to protect them. sometimes, they just fail because of a crappy part that got by the inspection process.

Me hard drive beeping? Wire?

Hi, I have a Verbatim 2.5" Portable Hard Drive USB 2.0 320GB. When I first bought it (last year) it beeped on a certain computer but worked for everyone else. The ones that worked had different types of windows so that wouldn't be the problem. After a year, I lost the cable and have bought a new one. This one however, was 30 volts (or something like that) and the hard drive beeped for every computer, even ones that were previously working. Only one computer sometimes worked. To make that one work, I hate to adjust the wire so therefore, it's the wire that are causing this. I'm gonna get a new cable but which one should I get. I don't have the instructions manual for the hard drive. Can someone help me?

Answer
You need to have the original power supply that came with the product, as it is at the specified volt and amp to keep your hdd running properly. Inside a chassis with a modular power supply, the amps can be changed on the fly according to the speed and power consumption of the drive. However, when it is inside an enclosure with it's own converter, you have a lot less room for change in amp, which is why it has to be the exact cord that was meant for it. You can always buy a third party enclosure, and place the hdd inside of that. And they are pretty cheap, too.
