My external hard drive is a shared drive on my network. How long can it stay on?

I'm planning no keeping it on for at least 12 hours a day.

Answer
External hard drives are simply the same kinds of hard drives that they put in computers (or into laptops). They just have a power cable (sometimes) and a data cable (USB or firewire).

The specific answer would depend on the drive that you bought. What you're looking for is the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF). There has been some interesting research along these lines:

Frankly, hard drive manufacturers typically publish an MTBF number around a million hours. So leaving it on for 12 hours a day means about 131 years of use if you had one million hours of MTBF.

Note, however, that such numbers are averages and are based on theoretical math models. We all know that real hard drives can and do fail, and they fail much, much sooner than 131 years. The fact that you turn it on or off probably doesn't really make much difference. The drives tend to fail somewhere in the 3-5 year range on average in my experience. If you replaced it every 2 years, you'd probably be a lot safer.

Don't kid yourself that you can't get a 'lemon' and have it fail 90 days after you buy it. But expecting failure in the 3-5 year range is prudent, even though many hard drives run for far, far longer.

How to connect external hard drive to network?

KRV

let me start by saying I am very technology dumb. I was told that it is possible to hook my external hard drive to our wireless network.
I am interested in doing so for two reasons...
1. to be able to access the folders on it from either laptop in the house.
2. to watch movies saved to it via the x-box????

Is this possible and how do I go about it?
I have verizon wireless

Answer
You can connect the external HDD to one of the computers and then "Share" it across the network where all users on all computers will be able to see the shared files.

In order for you to stream video to the XBox you will need to setup "Windows Media Centre" on the same computer.

You cant just connect the external HDD to the network, you need a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device for this.
