portable external hard drive?

Adam

i am planning on buying this portable hard drive.

i am wondering if it will survive being jostled around in by back pack or not. (it will be off of course) or should i invest in a LaCie "Rugged" hard drive??? (still portable, but designed to take a beating)

Portable external hard drives?

Love'n'Hat

I've been looking to buy a 500gb external hard drive and have looked at top brands such as Seagate and Western Digital; however after reading reviews of various other brands on the internet, I'm concerned about reliability. I know that nothing is 100% reliable - both the external hard drive and the companies that produce them - but I would like a product which has the lowest chances of breaking down and maintaining efficiency.

In terms of aesthetic appeal, I'm not too focused on that as I'd rather have something unattractive that works rather than a beautiful product that dies on me quickly. Though generally I'd prefer something slim and not too bulky as I may need to carry it around.

Based on your own knowledge and perhaps experience, which brand would you recommend that fits this criteria above? I made the criteria quite loose and flexible as I have little knowledge on external hard drives myself. Also price is not an issue right now but ideally I'd like something under £100. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
500gb is not a must either, I'm willing to go down to 250gb.

Answer
I have a 180 GB external called a Passport that I use the most. Mainly because it is powered by the USB -- no external wall plugged power supply. However, let me caution you about hooking up any of these externals to Windows7. With Win7 you MUST find the device in Control Panel and 'unmount'. If you don't then the contents can be non-accessible to any other computer.

No problems with anything Linux running the show on the externals.

I've never had any reliability problems. I don't use my externals as a production storage drive. They are hooked up for temp archiving and then transferred to other computers.

Maxtor and Seagate are now one company. I have the 500GB and 1TB with both nameplates. What I use them for mainly is to transfer video footage that has been captured to the hard drive. These externals will not provide you with an extra drive to make movies. The video editor programs have to have the internal hard drive for making a continuous movie.
