Hey everyone,
I am planning to buy a new external harddrive for everyday use like movies, music,pictures etc. I will be connecting it to my xbox mostly to watch movies. Now i had Western Digital Elements 1TB and it only lasted for a year. There are two types that am confused between the portable ones (which are smaller in size) and regular big ones. If you guys could tell me if there is any other difference than the obvious size difference? I know portable cost just a bit more. But is there any speed difference. Also does big ones last longer than portables? Also which one you guys recommend? I was looking to buy for under $150. Size 500 GB - 1 TB.

Non-portable is better.
The portables draw power via USB and can run into problems if too many devices are plugged in (unless you're using a USB hub with its own AC adapter). Portables are also physically smaller and slower spinning.
But personally I don't recommend external non-portables either. The BEST solution is to buy a regular internal hard drive and a USB housing.

The USB interface on external drives often fails long before the drive itself does. Sometimes it's due to drops or hard bumps- incidents which seem to increase in frequency as drives get smaller. The simple fact is that devices which fit easily into a backpack, shirt pocket or purse are tossed around more casually and suffer more bumps and bruises than devices which are less convenient.
Sometimes a fall simply dislodges a connector, other times the interface board gets broken by the impact or fails due to heat or power problems, but the end result is similar. You need to open the case in order to fix the problem.
But many external drives come in sealed casings, making it nearly impossible to remove the drive inside without destroying or damaging the housing. Some have proprietary formatting or aren't recognized when connected to a USB interface other than the original manufacturer's. And too many come pre-loaded with bloatware.
Worst of all, many external drives don't have any form of active cooling which makes them more prone to overheating and early failure when used for extended periods of time.
With a regular internal drive and fan-cooled generic case, you can quickly recover from a failure of either the enclosure/interface or the drive. Replacing either is easy.

Im looking for a portable external usb hard drive to hold movies.

I would avoid Iomega like the plague. I have a 500gb that was full that died about two weeks after I bought it.
Have had pretty good luck with the Fantom drives. Still, on one of my Fantom drives, there is a "sector" that is inaccessible. The rest of the drive works and I can store data. None of my drives are old. Nevertheless, I have learned the hard way that external drives fail pretty regularly. In my experience, they have been far more unstable than internal drives.
I would recommend using Norton Ghost, True Image or a similar program to keep regular back ups of any external drives. Never paid much attention to backing anything up before, but I learned the hard way and have lost a lot of files, music, and video. My two cents ...
